Leverage the new “webhook” stage in Spinnaker
Jul 26, 2017 by DROdio
Spinnaker is a powerful continuous delivery and infrastructure management platform that enables global software delivery best-practices, and it just became a lot more pluggable and extensible via a new webhook stage for Spinnaker deployment pipelines. It was contributed to OSS Spinnaker by Albert Manyà, a DevOps Engineer at Schibsted Media Group in Barcelona, Spain. Thank you, Albert!
Albert described the addition as:
“Create a new stage for calling an external webhook / service, that will be useful for having a flexible way of interacting with technologies that have not yet been integrated with Spinnaker, for example running AWS lambdas or running Marathon deployments.”
This makes Spinnaker much more powerful for companies that want to tie it into other systems that Spinnaker doesn’t yet natively support.
We’ve just written some documentation on how to enable the webhook stage in Spinnaker. The documentation includes:
- How to configure Spinnaker to make a web request from a pipeline
- Passing information into the web request
- Polling for completion on long-running tasks
We often talk about how Spinnaker being an open-source project helps everyone using it deploy with more velocity and confidence, because the community adds in valuable features that are accessible to everyone. The addition of this webhook stage to Spinnaker is a great example of how the work of one person benefits the entire community.
Here’s a quick video showing how to add a webhook stage to a simple pipeline:
Here are a few screenshots showing how the stage is configured and used:
